The room had been silent for some time. Whenever one of them would begin to share their thoughts with the group, they’d end up stopping themselves before more than a syllable could emerge. Their brains would simply not accept any possible theories that they could come up with as potential realities. Except for…

“My money is on alien robots,” Jeremy said, “outer space terminators that have found a way to control the human mind and are going to eradicate our species so that the time of the machine can begin.”

Jennings was staring at Jeremy with a new look. It was making him quite nervous.

“You know, I liked it better when I just wanted to kick you in the teeth when you opened your mouth,” Jennings said. “The fact that I’m actually pondering that notion is seriously damaging my calm.”

Jeremy now got worried as well.

“It has to be biological, just like the brain leech it is using,” Douglas said.

“I agree,” Reese jumped in. “Robots would likely use hardware and this thing is a bit unusual. The organism itself seems a bit incomplete.”

“How is that?” Jennings asked.

“I don’t see a way for it to have actually gotten into his brain. And there doesn’t appear to be any scar tissue that would indicate a point of entry,” Reese continued.

“So it didn’t burrow its way in there,” Douglas added.

“It could have been implanted at a smaller level and then grew,” Jeremy added.

“That would actually make sense,” Reese said.

Jeremy was back to being proud of himself.

“Nguyen, you said it isn’t a virus or bacteria or tumor or anything right?” Jennings asked.

“That’s right.”

“Ok, I want you to work with Reese to continue to identify as much as you can about this thing. Larson and Kano, you are with me.”

“What about us?” Douglas inquired.

“Yeah?” Jeremy said, quickly cutting himself off.

“I think you NASA boys have caused enough trouble,” Jennings said. “Our world already has enough problems without you guys bringing more in from outer space through one of your little experiments.”

“Wait a second,” Jeremy said. “You can’t blame us for this.”

“No, why not?”

“Because it wasn’t from our experiments,” Douglas added.

“Excuse me?” Jennings asked, his eyes focused intently on the duo. “This thing has been NASA’s baby, and now you don’t want to take credit for it?”

“NASA was only brought in to be a face,” Jeremy said. “Our only actual job was to assist in astronaut training, a little engineering on the ships, and host the launch.”

“Host it, you mean run it?” Jennings asked.

“No,” Douglas said. “Edwards used his own guys for everything.”

“From Kaplin?”

“Some of them,” Douglas said. “You know, this is actually starting to make sense now.”

“Not to me,” Jennings said.

“Me either,” Reese jumped in.

“I’ve been lost for a while now,” Nguyen admitted.

“No, he’s right,” Jeremy added. “It never made sense to us why we weren’t more involved. After all, Douglas here should have been their number one guy for the wormhole creations.”

“Did you not play nice with others?” Jennings joked.

“No, that would be me,” Jeremy said.
